The recent monsoon rains have caused a devastating roof leak at the Pueblo of Laguna's— San José de la Laguna Mission and convento, in Laguna, New Mexico. Additional efforts are underway to determine the extent of damage to both the exterior and interior walls of the church and its artwork.
The church is located along historic route 66 in the heart of Laguna Pueblo and was established in 1699. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with a note that it "is one of the best-preserved buildings of its type in the United States. In traditional pueblo construction it is built with primarily with sandstone, mud mortar, and mud plaster.
It is estimated that a new roof will cost about $30,000+ and the Laguna Community Foundation (LCF), with guidance from the LCF Board of Directors and Laguna members, have established a new fund to save the San José de la Laguna Mission. There are many other costs associated with remediation efforts and this is just a start. A gift in any amount will go toward protecting an iconic Pueblo of Laguna treasure that has withstood time for over 300 years.
LCF is set-up to serve as a charitable hub in support of Pueblo of Laguna initiatives and community projects. As such, we accept and redistribute donations. Whether donating by check or making a donation online, your gift will not only be secure but will also be managed for maximum impact.
